Did you know that your elevator or lift supplier is not required to participate in a safety program? While many of the larger established companies have programs in place don't assume that the company you choose to deal with does.
A Certificate of Recognition (COR) is a great way to verify that the elevator or lift company of your choice is committed to safety. Being COR certified indicates the your safety policies and procedures have been reviewed by a third party and are deemed to meet or exceed the government standard.
Another way to ensure you are dealing with a company that has a high regard for safety is to ask lots of questions:
- What is their safety record? Have they reported any incidents in the last few years?
- Are they trained in First Aid?
- What other courses have they taken? (fall prevention, confined spaces etc.)
- Do they constantly update this training?
- Do they have a safety manual you can view?
- Do they employ a safety officer?
Safety is not simply filling out forms and completing courses; It is a state of mind. Safety is everyone’s business and must always be considered when entering a job site. A good safety program looks at everything from driving habits to workplace hazards.
After all, if a company is not prepared to take the safety of their employees seriously, how can you ensure they value your safety?
